Prepare the Cake
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
- Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool.
Make the Frosting
- In a bowl, beat together peanut butter and softened butter until creamy.
- Gradually add powdered sugar and heavy cream, mixing until smooth and fluffy.
Assemble the Cake
- Once the cakes are cool, place one layer on a serving plate.
- Spread a layer of peanut butter frosting on top, then drizzle with caramel sauce.
- Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides with remaining peanut butter frosting.
- Top with chopped Snickers bars and chopped peanuts, if using.
